Breakdancers of the world unite!
The melding of dance and acrobatics, the combination of athletics and cool,
Breakdancing has become the hottest international dance/workout sensation.
It's been around for more than twenty years on the streets of New York City. Through
choreographic routines and dance steps that tell stories, breaking has hit the world in
a big way! Lots of hard work have gone into it's creation and development. With it's
first inspirations from the free-style tap dancing of the 1930's to the disco dancing of
the 1970's, the youth in New York (and the Big D in the privacy of his own bedroom)
started using the floor and their bodies more and more in expressing themselves through
dance. While trying to impress the ladies and competing with each other, the early
Breakers went further and further into creating new styles and moves like spinning on
the floor with their backs, heads and more...
It's a combination of moves and steps -- back spins, shoulder spins, head spins,
fist glides, sweep swipes, footwork, flips, mime, body poppin', the moonwalk and other
acrobatic and jazz dance moves.
Soon an unofficial school of Break Dancing developed that eventually was picked up
by the media and the Big D was breaking on cardboard in his backyard- and the rest is
history. And other than the dance itself, the most important part of breaking is the
music. The beats and rhythms are everything. From early rap (Ice T and Run DMC) to the
dark melodies of the Smiling Villains to Herbie Hancock's "Rockit" to Blondie's "Rapture"-
A breaker can not do without it.
I have created this page- to help the less fortunate with the art of breakdance. To
the music, to the vocabulary, to the moves, to the style and most of all to the passion.
Enjoy. -David James.
